Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy in Macromolecular Science

چکیده

Today, virtually every experimental paper published in ‘‘Macromolecular Chemistry and Physics’’ includes characterization of the polymers under study by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. In addition to monitoring the various synthetic steps, which eventually lead to the new polymers or supramolecular systems described, high-resolution NMR provides a number of important parameters, which are specific to macromolecules. Examples are the stereochemical configuration, geometrical isomerism, and regioregularity. The ability to selectively identify the NMR signals of end-groups offers a precise way of determining the molar mass of macromolecules and advanced multidimensional techniques allow the determination of the three-dimensional structure of biopolymers in solution. In addition, multidimensional solid-state NMR spectroscopy plays an ever increasing role in elucidating molecular dynamics, order and phase separation in bulk polymer materials. It is gratifying that important advances in NMR technology have always been applied to synthetic and even biological macromolecules almost immediately after they had been invented. But, more than that, papers describing the new type of information that became available to the polymer community were published in our celebrated Journal at early stages. After a brief overview of the development of NMR as such a few illustrative examples are collected here.

Analysis of Cerebrospinal Fluid in Diagnosis of Bacterial Meningitis; Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy: A Systematic Review

Background: Analysis of biofluids provides a unique window into the biochemical status of a living organism since the composition of a given biofluid will be modulated according to the level of function of the cells that are intimately concerned with its manufacture and secretion. One of the most successful approaches to biofluid analysis has been the application of NMR spectroscopy. Objective...

Atomic Scale Structural Studies of Macromolecular Assemblies by Solid-state Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy

Supramolecular protein assemblies play fundamental roles in biological processes ranging from host-pathogen interaction, viral infection to the propagation of neurodegenerative disorders. Such assemblies consist in multiple protein subunits organized in a non-covalent way to form large macromolecular objects that can execute a variety of cellular functions or cause detrimental consequences. Ato...

Magnetic resonance imaging of the rabbit eye. Improved anatomical detail using magnetization transfer contrast.

Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging previously has been used to examine structure and pathologies of the eye. The present study investigates the use of a saturation-transfer technique, which exploits water-macromolecular proton magnetic interactions, to enhance image contrast in the rabbit eye in vivo. Upon steady-state saturation of the macromolecular-proton magnetization, the wate...

Diffusion NMR studies of macromolecular complex formation, crowding and confinement in soft materials.

Label-free methods to obtain hydrodynamic size from diffusion measurements are desirable in environments that contain multiple macromolecular species at a high total concentration: one example is the crowded cellular environment. In complex, multi-species macromolecular environments - in this article, we feature aqueous systems involving polymers, surfactants and proteins - the link between dyn...

Gadoxane – A Novel Degradable Silsesquioxane Based Macromolecular MRI Contrast Agent

Introduction Since their discovery polyhedral oligosilsesquioxanes (POSS) have found an ever increasing number of applications in material science, catalysis, as building blocks for dendrimers and only recently biomedical use (e.g. as drug carrier systems) were reported as well. In the last two years studies of silsesquioxane based contrast agents (CA) for MRI were published [1,2] in which the ...
